About Hopeless No More - Every Child Deserves a Classroom. Not Someday. Now.
Somewhere right now, a child who survived war, persecution, displacement, or life in a refugee settlement is waiting.
Not waiting because they lack potential.
Not waiting because they lack courage.
Waiting because they lack access.
A classroom.
A teacher.
A desk.
A chance.
That gap is why Hopeless No More exists.
What This Is
Hopeless No More is the storytelling and advocacy platform of the Horizons Coalition Refugee School Initiative, a mission dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for refugee and displaced children in Uganda, Rwanda, and beyond.
We believe education is not a privilege children must earn after surviving tragedy.
It is a human right that travels with them wherever they go.
This blog exists to tell the stories behind that belief.
Here you'll find:
- Stories from refugee communities and schools
- Updates from the field
- Resources for educators, churches, and advocates
- Opportunities to sponsor students and classrooms
- Practical ways to bring hope where it is needed most
Most importantly, you'll meet the children, families, teachers, and leaders proving every day that hopelessness never gets the final word.
How This Started
I did not come to this work from the outside looking in.
I came from inside the story.
I was born in 1973 while my parents were fleeing anti-Tutsi violence in Rwanda. My first days were spent near a refugee border crossing between Rwanda and Uganda.
Years later, our refugee camp was destroyed during regional conflict. We returned to Rwanda carrying little more than survival itself.
As a child, I lost my mother. As a teenager, I fled again during the violence that would culminate in the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. I crossed dangerous terrain alone seeking safety, uncertain whether I would ever see my family again.
What saved me was not simply food or shelter.
It was people who believed my future mattered.
Missionaries.
Teachers.
Sponsors.
Mentors.
They invested in a refugee child before the world could see what he might become.
Because of that investment, I received an education, served in the United States Navy, earned advanced degrees, became a chaplain, leadership coach, speaker, and humanitarian leader.
Today I carry a simple conviction:
Every child deserves the same opportunity that changed my life.
That conviction led to the creation of the Horizons Coalition Refugee School Initiative, supporting educational access, sponsorship, mentorship, leadership development, and community transformation among refugee populations.
Hopeless No More is the voice behind that mission.

What We Believe
We believe hope is more than an emotion.
Hope is a structure.
Hope is a classroom.
Hope is a teacher who learns a child's name.
Hope is a sponsor who believes in a future they may never personally see.
Hope is a community refusing to look away.
We believe every child carries God-given dignity, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or legal status.
We believe education remains one of the most powerful pathways out of poverty, displacement, and generational instability.
We believe when one child gains access to consistent, dignified education, an entire family's trajectory can change.
And when families change, communities change.
And when communities change, nations change.
Above all, we believe that hopeless is never the final word.
